Are The Fast Check Out Lanes In Grocery Stores Really Faster?

check-out-line-by-Zeetz-Jones.jpg This is a good question. Most of us would assume that checkout lanes limited to 15 items or less are the fastest ones, right?

Surprise! That is not always the case.

When doing the math regarding time spent in checkout lanes, it turns out that it takes a person 48 seconds to get through a checkout lane in addition to 2.8 seconds for each item in that person's cart

This means that it would actually be better to get in a line behind someone who has 30 items, than it would be to wait in line behind 3 people who each had 15 items in the so-called fast lane.

That same study also found that cash transactions were actually faster than credit card ones. Go figure.
