I love to comparison shop to make sure I am getting the best deal for my money.
Sales people, on the other hand, are not crazy about comparison shoppers. They want to catch you as soon as you think you might want to buy an item, and get you to make an impulse purchase on the spot. They want your money now and are not afraid to pressure you into making a purchase. Some of these tactics can make shopping for certain items a frightening experience.
Here are 4 tips for resisting high-pressure sales...
#1 Leave your money at home.
Never take your money with you the first time you visit a store to investigate a large purchase. This will make it much easier for you to say "No, I am not done shopping around." If a salesperson says they are making you a one-time offer, simply let them know that such tactics are offensive and that you do not intend to rush your purchase decision.
#2 Let them know that you have no intention of buying today.
Whenever I walk into a furniture store, sales people bombard me even before I get my foot in the door. I always stop and say, “I have no intention of buying today. Right now, I am just shopping around”. In most cases, they will give you their card for when you are ready to shop. If I feel that I like them, I hold on to the card and even write notes on the back if I saw something I wanted. If I did not like anything or did not feel inclined to buy anything, I dispose of the card.
#3 Take children with you and prompt them to be difficult.
This tactic can be great fun. I use it when I am expecting the highest-pressure sales pitches. I take my 2 kids with me and encourage them to start bickering when I give them a sign. It is usually a special cough or sneeze that signals them to act unruly. It works like a charm every time and gives
you a great excuse to get away from a high-pressure salesperson. If you ever want to look at a timeshare, you really should take your kids!
#4 Always sleep on it before buying.
If the salesperson will offer you a special deal today, he or she will most likely offer you a special deal tomorrow. Do not be deceived. If you have a check or card in your hand and you are ready to spend money for the right deal, then you can bet they will bend over backwards. It's always best to go home and give your purchase special thought to make sure you really want and need what is offered.

Crazy...
I realize that tip number three is a bit harsh, and I am sorry that it put a bee in your proverbial Bonnet. However, from my point of view, I have never gone into a sales situation where I wasn't actually considering a purchase, even though I prefer to have several conversations and to comparison shop before buying. I thought up this "neat little trick" when I felt like a salesperson was holding me captive in a back room and not taking "I need to sleep on it" for an answer. I have only had to use it one time since then, (once again feeling trapped with no clear exit) and I always make sure my kids are clean and germ free before bringing them out in public.
I take great exception to #3 as a woman who worked really hard to go a good job working STRAIGHT commission. I had to stand up all day in pantyhose, high heels and business attire for NO PAY until I sold something. Oh yes, let's abuse the salespeople by all means. I'm glad you think it is funny.
- People are hired to sell. Go in expecting to find the salesperson in the "always be selling" mode. IT IS THEIR JOB!
- Yeah, I know some people who are salespeople are very hard sell. Did it ever cross anyone's mind that they have bills to pay? Have problems you never thought of etc. Just tell them they are coming on a little strong and you'd appreciate it if they pulled back or sent another sales person to assist you.
- What kind of children are you raising that you would tell them to misbehave? OMG, like a salesperson doesn't have enough to deal with trying to meet the sales goal they have on them as well as the extended warranty goals they have to maintain to keep their job.
- Sales people stand on their feet all day and then to have some crazy parent waltz in who TELLS/PROMPTS their children to misbehave? SHAME ON YOU! This will come back to haunt you. Trust me on this!
So do the salespeople a favor, stay home with your money and your kids. Shop online and stay out of their way while they attempt to make a living and feed their kids and pay their bills. While you are at it, don't go shopping sick either. Salespeople can't afford to take time off from work and they don't need you or your snot nose kids coming in and dropping germs all over the place.
May you have to work just one year in retail for you to have to eat your words. Can you tell? YOU PISSED ME OFF!
